Shadow Girls Cult, co-founded in 2018 by Cass Bray & Zane Exactly, is a queer shadow puppetry and projections duo based in Seattle.
Their practice involves a unique blend of shadow puppetry and live animation techniques. Using overhead projectors, adapted camera irises, human silhouettes, liquid light, and other analog technology, we create a cinematic viewing experience for the audience. Although their work falls under the umbrella of shadow puppetry, it defies one single genre. They are both deeply inspired by film, especially the classics and film noir. Much of their work leans into that world and blends high contrast, black-and-white imagery with sharp, saturated color.
Shadow Girls Cult’s ultimate goal in their practice is to expand the definition of puppetry and shift the audience’s expectations of what puppetry can look like. They will use their space at the studios for rehearsals of their new full-length show, shadow-based workshops, and performances, giving the public a behind-the-scenes look at their work.
