Joyous Kwanzaa: An Ubuntu Affair at The Self Care Square
December 31, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
FreeJoyous Kwanzaa is an in-person and IG Live Ubuntu Affair where we celebrate African Heritage by diving deep into the Ngozu Saba, Seven Principles, of Kwanzaa as a community with discussion and fun activities for the youth and the wise! This is a celebration open to all that are interested in celebrating African Heritage and to those that are interested in celebrating or learning to celebrate Kwanzaa.
Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach, as a way to bring African Americans together as a community and help them reconnect with their African roots and heritage. Kwanzaa celebrates family, community, culture, and heritage. As the Civil Right Movement transitioned into Black nationalism in the late 1960s, men such as Karenga were searching for ways to reconnect African Americans with their heritage.
Every day there will be a Kwanzaa exhibit for your to explore before or during the evening celebrations. From 5PM-9PM we will celebrate Kwanzaa by learning about the Kwanzaa tradition, meet and pick the brains of keynote speakers, and participate in activities that encourage the understanding of the Principle of the day! Bring your kids! We will have a Kid’s Corner Counselor there to guide your children into some Kwanzaa themed Storytelling, Games, and Crafts for the day! Every day is something different and fun!
