About Prairie Underground
Launching its first collection in 2005, Prairie Underground is a Seattle-based sustainable fashion brand known for its blend of timeless designs and eco-conscious practices. Dedicated to reducing environmental impact, the brand creates high-quality, ethically produced apparel that appeals to style-conscious, environmentally aware consumers. As a small-batch, slow-fashion design house, Prairie Underground focuses on crafting adaptable clothing that encourages self-expression while maintaining the simplicity of a daily uniform. Inspired by activists, artists, and non-conformists, the brand believes that creativity and ethics go hand in hand, fostering a deeper connection between fashion and the values of sustainability and innovation.
History
Prairie Underground was founded in 2004 by two best friends from Nebraska who shared a desire for artistic freedom, self-expression, and a vision for a better world. After moving to Seattle, they launched the brand with the goal of creating fashion that was both innovative and environmentally conscious – becoming one of the first sustainable brands on the market. From the very beginning, Prairie Underground focused on ethical production and sustainability. All of the brand’s garments are sewn locally by a dedicated team of five full-time sewers and three independently owned sewing contractors, all based within 15 minutes of the studio in Seattle. They are committed to using eco-friendly materials, including organic cotton, hemp, and deadstock fabrics, ensuring that each piece reflects their core values of creativity, craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility.
