Hobby to Small Business: Q&A with Rusted Element Design

Continuing our features on the Seattle Restored Collective Market, today we’re talking with Jen Albright of Rusted Element Design. Her wood and resin creations started as a creative outlet, but have grown into a full-fledged small business. The Collective Market’s goals is to allow small business owners to test their business in a retail setting, and Jen is excited to see how her business grows after this program.

Q: Tell us about what drew you to creating your business idea.

A: I started Rusted Element Design as a hobby and as a creative outlet in 2018. After doing a few art shows I realized people really enjoy the products that I enjoy making. I was working full-time through early 2021.

Q: Why did you want to participate in the Seattle Restored program?

A: This program not only helps small businesses take another giant step forward but it is also helping to revitalize the city. It has been hit hard the last few years and could use this much needed TLC from the program. I used to live in the city and it has been hard to watch it deteriorate. Super happy to see progress being made and to be a participant in its turnaround!

I am only here because I was lucky enough to catch it on the news in 2022. I thought it sounded like such an amazing program and opportunity. I truly didn’t think I would be accepted so I was very shocked (and so excited!) when I learned I had been short-listed.

Q: What’s it like working with other participants on the Collective Market?

A: It has been a great experience so far. Between the people working for Seattle Restored and the other participants in the Collective, it has been much better than I would have ever imagined it to be. Everyone has been so easy to work with and helpful.

Q: Has this experience changed your thinking about how to proceed with your business in the future?

A: It has only made me more excited for what is to come and what can be accomplished with my small business.

Q: Has your experience with Seattle Restored so far opened up other opportunities?

A: Not yet but I can certainly see the potential. It is obvious, Seattle Restored is connected in so many ways throughout the city.

Q: Anything else you want us to know?

A: Hope to see you at our events soon!
